Folk Art Primitive Landscape Painting Signed Amish Country Vintage Large Horse
This is a really lovely example of the increasingly popular homegrown version of American folk art. This was found in a county adjoining Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and it is a scene featuring two Amish men father and son? In a horse and buggy exiting a covered bridge of the sort which are rapidly disappearing. Two small boys sit on a fence just ahead of the horse’s path. The scene is verdant and feels like early spring. The trees at the right are handled in a particularly interesting way, with an almost filmy life covering them which is probably early spring blossoming. The palette is interesting pastel colors, almost an Easter palette. The painter has signed Schaffer and dated it May 9th 1982. This is a larger sized painting as folk art goes, measuring 24 inches by 20 inches (frame). As the old folk ways and traditions vanish, folk art like this becomes increasingly rare and increasingly collectible. Curators and museums are reassessing this interesting part of our American culture and finds like this will become increasingly rarer.
