Large Carved Rooster, By Daniel & Donna Strawser, Original, 1993
This folk art carving of a giant barnyard rooster was created by Daniel and Donna Strawser in 1993. It was carved from a solid chunk of wood and polychrome painted by the couple. Originally from Lancaster County, Dan learned to carve from his teacher and mentor Lester Breininger, the acclaimed Pennsylvania Redware potter and teacher of the history of the Pennsylvania Dutch people and their arts. His early in-laws, Walter and June Gottshall, renowned American Folk artists themselves, were also a great influence on his work. This great bird, in his black and white rooster coat and sporting his red cock’s hat, stands tall on a green grass base. 16″H x 12″W x 3D and weighs nearly 4 pounds. He is signed D & DS and dated 1993/94 on his base in black marker. He comes from the collection of a single owner. A grand piece of Pennsylvania Dutch American folk art, he commands one’s attention immediately. He is in excellent condition and comes from the collection of a private owner. A great example of the talents of the early settlers of Pennsylvania.
