REB Roberts Painting BRING COWS HOME RIGHT NOW Outsider Folk Art Grand Rapids MI
“BRING THE COWS HOME RIGHT NOW”. By “REB” Roberts – Outsider Artist. From Grand Rapids, Michigan. 19″ x 37″ Unframed. Description & Condition : Reb Roberts is an American Artist (1954-) and currently lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Roberts has been labeled an outsider artist, along with other terms, such as, intuitive, visionary, folk, naive. Jean Dubuffet, a French artist from the 20th Century coined the term “Art Brut” — which later turned into the term “Outsider Art” — to describe work that exists outside the art world, free from the constraints of art education and concepts of modern art-making; a direct way to express oneself. Reb Roberts continues this tradition into the 21st Century. This listing is for “RIGHT NOW” painting by REB. Bright colors (purple, black, white, green, orange, yellow) and repetitive patterns cover this unframed canvas. More importantly, this painting depicts his famous cow head. The canvas itself is stapled onto the front side of a wood frame recycled? The back of the canvas was painted a dark yellow color, and has a surprise feature that includes small (4×4.5) sized lighthouses stenciled? In white paint, including Seul Choix Point, Manistee North Pier, Round Island, Eagle Bluff, Gull Rock LIghthouse and one other that is illegilble to read. The canvas is stretched on a wood frame and REB has painted black and white stripes along the side. The frame is a finished light colored wood. REB has used a black magic marker to note the following on the frame: Right Now by REB 2016 A. A Well Known American Folk Artist Man. No frame is required. It also has the original hangar made out of multi-color electrical wiring on it and is ready for hanging. Here’s your chance to own an original piece of art, created by REB. Reb Roberts is an artist, educator, and collaborator who remains active and involved in the Grand Rapids community and local art scene. Born and raised in New Orleans, Reb arrived in West Michigan in 1972 and enrolled at GVSU’s William James College. He spent over 20 years working. In early childhood education, a passion that continues to this day through partnerships and artist residencies. In the mid-1990s Reb began to intentionally focus on creating small-scale art, and large works in public spaces. Then, in 1999 he and his wife, Carmella Loftis opened The Sanctuary Fok Art Gallery in the Heartside neighborhood of downtown Grand Rapids. For 18 years, their space was a hub for artists and art that embraced authenticity, inspiration, and collaboration. For those folks who live in Western Michigan, especially in the downtown area, you are familiar with seeing the art of REB being displayed along city streets, gallery walls, on buildings and interiors. He is a fixture in this community and has been known as the “grandfather of outsider art”. We recommend that you visit the GVSU online Art Gallery site for interesting background information regarding Reb Roberts. They have a fabulous video interview with Roberts and a video showing him create a piece of art. We also recommend that you visit the Sanctuary Folk Art Gallery that directly connects you with Roberts and his artwork. Taken from the Grand Valley State University [GVSU] Online Art Gallery Site; including the photo used in our photo gallery. 19″ wide x 36-1/2″ tall by 1-3/8 depth. While this piece is signed by the Artist, Reb Roberts, there is no date listed. We believe this to be from the early 1990s. The canvas is nice and taught. No holes, repairs, stains, tears. Outsider art is not “perfect”. There is a rawness to the art, paint and other supplies used to create this piece. That’s what makes it so unique and creative.
